Established in June 2018 by the Oyelakin twin brothers, PLAYLUX was founded on their love for luxury items, which many view as a symbol of success. Like many seasoned business owners who started during their college years, we began Playlux by sourcing supplies from the bustling Lagos market. We connected with numerous professional wholesalers who, despite the absence of social networks and the internet, were thriving by selling to retailers in the fashion industry across Nigeria and Africa. The demand for imitated luxury wristwatch brands quickly spread from Nigeria to the rest of Africa. However, one critical aspect overlooked by wholesalers was that consumers were not making informed decision that the brands on these watches and jewelry are not the originally the manufacturer. While wholesalers were transparent with retailers, some retailers, especially those selling on social platforms, would mislead uninformed buyers by selling imitated luxury products as genuine. This practice has resulted in a lack of consumer feedback and has damaged the reputation of reputable retailers who strive to sell these products transparently and honestly. We began by sourcing fashion items such as sneakers, hats, and apparel from retail platforms that offer original brands in Europe, the US, and Canada. Some of our watches are Swiss-made, acquired from a trusted source. The majority of our other jewelry, including INDEX Rings and Playlux watches, are made in China.
